Where Architecture Meets Playfulness on Jeju Island / Orange Container Cafe Basket

Nestled amidst the serene beauty of Jeju Island, Cafe The Container is a delightful architectural marvel shaped like a vibrant tangerine container in an orchid setting. Its bold and vivid orange hues instantly catch the eye, setting it apart from the natural surroundings of the island. The cafe’s reinforced concrete structure, meticulously crafted with delicate plastering and painting work, creates a smooth industrial aesthetic that pays homage to its container inspiration.

One cannot help but marvel at the cafe’s unique handle, a stainless steel masterpiece that was expertly bent and positioned using a crane, further accentuating the playful industrial theme. Inside, Cafe The Container surprises with a unique pulley system designed to deliver drinks, adding an element of fun and innovation to the customer experience. In its entirety, Cafe The Container is not just a cafe; it’s a playful architectural play, where design and creativity converge to offer a truly distinctive and memorable cafe experience amidst the natural beauty of Jeju Island.

One of the things that comes to mind when thinking of Jeju Island is tangerines.  Jeju is full of processed products using tangerines, including juice, chocolate, tarts and even cosmetics.  Go Won-hyuk, the CEO of ‘Cafe the Container”, said he wanted to make these common tangerines feel a little different.

Then what came to mind was the box used to store tangerines at the farm.  Cafe The Container, where he personally conceived and implemented all the concepts and designs of the cafe, is literally shaped like a citrus harvest basket.  Facing the huge container, I felt as if i had been summoned to the land of giants.

Aesthetic Interior design / Orange Cafe Container topic

When customers opened the store with the idea that the interior concept would be as stimulating as the unusual exterior, we created a twist in the simple interior of white and wood and created a warm atmosphere.  We also installed spacious windows so that you can fully enjoy the view of the orchid.

Pulley system to deliver drinks

Due to the nature of the building it was dangerous to move beverages trays downstairs due to the high ceilings and narrow stairs, so we were wondering how to serve drinks.  One day, my mother’s electric train broke down and she was checking it out.  She put bananas and soy milk in a black plastic bag, tied it with twine, and dropped it off from the veranda of the villa on the 3rd floor to the parking lot for us who were working without dinner.  Here, I remembered the image of lowering a bucket into a well using a pulley, and I thought that it would be convenient and fun for guests if drinks were lowered from the open ceiling on a pulley, so I installed the pulley.  In fact, guests sometimes say it feels like a gift coming down from the sky. (laugh)

The place where the cafe is located is my hometown and the place where I helped my mother farm.  While I was thinking about the future with my wife, it occurred to me that now is the time to make our living space more beautiful together with her.

Visitors try many different sets using the Cafe the Container as a backdrop, sometimes reaching with their hands to the handle, or imposing their bodies in the foreground, entering the container.

How would you like Cafe the Container to be remembered?

Containers motto is ‘fun’ and ‘healing’.  I hope you will come into the unique container and feel as if you are in a world of joy and innocence, even if just for a moment.  When we hear the sound of laughter when the pulley goes down, we feel happy and rewarded.  We hope that this will be a haven where you can relax and feel the fullness of Jeju Island in the most Jeju-like cafe.

Future uses / Cafe the Container perfect basket getaway

Cafes in South Korea are used for many diverse uses

We do not want the space to be limited to just drinking tea and looking at unique buildings, so we are researching ways to utilise the cafe in various ways in the orchid.  We are currently accelerating preparations for the upcoming citrus harvest experience.  Before the end of the year, we play to increase customer satisfaction by providing various entertainment options, such as holding performances on the lawn.  We are striving to become a cafe where our customers come back again and again with their friends.  Cafe the Container is no longer a basket for tangerines, but a space for people.  Please fill it out together!
