Inside Cafe.Ceres: A Dessert-Inspired Café by Behind Design

Cafe.Ceres by Behind Design is a corner café dedicated to freshly made cakes, where every detail of the interior reflects the craft and warmth of its offerings. Drawing on the concept of a “dessert workshop,” the space combines rich textures, warm tones, and layered forms to create an inviting atmosphere. From its travertine bar counter inspired by mille-feuille layers to its egg-yolk-hued walls and sponge cake–like ceiling, the café is designed as a multisensory experience—one that connects the artistry of baking with the joy of savoring each bite.

What was the inspiration behind the design of Cafe.Ceres?

The design concept for Cafe.Ceres was inspired by the idea of a “dessert workshop.” Materials and colors were chosen to embody the brand’s spirit while creating a warm, inviting environment. Central to the concept is the bar counter, made from stacked layers of travertine to resemble the delicate layers of a mille-feuille cake. Positioned at the heart of the café, it connects the takeaway window with the dine-in area, serving as the central visual axis—just like the core of a dessert that ties all elements together.

How does the material palette reflect the café’s identity?

Every material was selected to evoke the comforting experience of freshly baked goods. The walls are painted in a warm, egg-yolk-inspired hue, creating a cozy ambiance. Overhead, wood wool cement boards line the ceiling, evoking the soft, airy texture of sponge cake while improving acoustics. Subtle metallic accents, reminiscent of baking trays, are integrated into custom fixtures and shelving, catching soft light and reinforcing the artisanal character of the café.

What role does the bar counter play in the overall design?

The travertine bar counter is both the visual and functional centerpiece of Cafe.Ceres. Its layered form not only references the structure of a mille-feuille but also creates a tangible connection between the takeaway and dine-in areas. This placement ensures the bar acts as the café’s anchor point, drawing the eye and organizing the flow of the space.

How do the design elements contribute to the guest experience?

Every design choice serves a functional and symbolic purpose, shaping a space that feels like a freshly baked dessert—layered, comforting, and full of depth. The combination of warm tones, textured materials, and subtle metallic details creates an immersive environment that invites guests to slow down, savor each bite, and embark on a sensory journey celebrating the craft of baking.
