Revealing the Past – How did the discovery of the original Austrian terrazzo floor and salvaged elements shape your design approach for Siaivo DIVE BAR?

This is exactly where our bureau excels. We never finalize a design before construction begins because you never know what lies beneath the layers of time. When we uncover stunning materials, we often choose to preserve them—even if it means adjusting the previously confirmed design. The final result is always a surprise, and that’s what makes it so exciting!

A Space with Two Lives – How did you design the interiors to transition seamlessly from a coffee shop by day to a bar at night?

First and foremost, it’s the light. During the day, sunlight pours through the large façade windows, filling the space with warmth. Then, as evening falls, a cozy glow takes over, creating an entirely different vibe.

The second thing is the seating. Small tables seem to invite you—perfect for a morning coffee or an evening drink.

Challenging Tradition – What inspired your decision to incorporate unconventional seating arrangements, and how do they enhance the guest experience?

Small spaces make you think bigger! That’s why we incorporated plenty of high bar chairs and small tables—to maximize capacity and create a dynamic, social atmosphere. This standing-bar concept brings to mind the cozy, lively pubs of the UK.

Creating a Timeless Aesthetic – What materials, treatments, or design choices were most crucial in making the space feel like it has existed for over a century?

When choosing new materials, we selected only those that age naturally and beautifully—marble, stainless steel, mirror, and wood. Of course, we also incorporated plenty of reclaimed materials, from tiles to interior elements like sinks and chairs. And for lighting, we opted only for warm, ambient tones—just like the glow of candlelight from a century ago.

Cultural Continuity – How does Siaivo DIVE BAR reflect both the past and present social cultures of L’viv, and what role do you see it playing in the city today?

Business in Ukraine means work, no matter what. Especially in Lviv, bars and coffee houses have always been popular, even when the economy struggled. It is the same now—still rolling.

Balancing Old and New – How did you navigate the tension between preserving historical character and integrating contemporary design elements?

Contrast is at the core of our design philosophy. The old will not be so charming without new details, which are polished and smooth against a background of cracked walls. And it works both ways—the new only feels truly valuable when it respects and coexists with the past.
