This Roseville cafe is known for its Scandinavian style interior, excellent coffee and inventive menu

Roseville cafe, Calibrate Coffee, attracts Sydney coffee lovers from far and wide with its excellent coffee, innovative and healthy menu options and village style setting with a relaxed ambience, occasionally interrupted by the screeching of local sulphur crested cockatoos.

The space is simple and Scandinavian in style, with wooden floors, bright white walls and suspended brass strip lights, pulled together with a grid of metal strips on counter, walls and ceiling.  The centrepiece is the custom-made Slayer espresso machine with a sleek white body and all the gadgets.

The cafe’s minimalist approach creates an inviting atmosphere, where patrons can enjoy their coffee amidst a clean and contemporary setting that exudes both warmth and sophistication in the quiet and leafy Sydney suburb of Roseville. Outdoor seating caters to locals out walking their well-behaved pooches.

Not far from the railway station in the sleepy North Shore suburb, Calibrate Coffee is a cafe as on-trend as they come. Sam Gabrielan, managing director of Gabriel Coffee and the brains behind Preview Cafe, Back & Forth and Ritual Coffee Traders, together with long-time friend Murat Kum, has added Calibrate Coffee to the fold.

Gabrielan and Kum are focusing on specialty coffee, importing micro-lot and high-end green beans. Rather than using Gabriel Coffee, Gabrielan has developed and roasted beans especially for the cafe, with two different blends: one designed for black coffees and the other for white.

The menu was created by Gabrielan’s wife, Taline, founder of Hippie Lane (a healthy dessert recipe app), who collaborated with chefs to design the wholefoods-based menu with an Asian fusion twist. The Calibrate Bowl is one way to start the morning, with avocado, a soft-boiled egg, a selection of pickles and ferments, labne, mustard greens, quinoa and a nut and seed-based crisp. For a sweeter option, there’s the acai bowl with coconut jelly, coconut yoghurt, seasonal fruit and Hippie Lane RAWnola, presented in an egg shape.

For lunch, there’s healthy and delicious options like grilled asparagus on sourdough with hummus, greens, radish, sardines and dukkah or a mushroom toastie with kimchi and chilli mayo. On a hot summer’s day, finish with a refreshing cold brew over ice.

A Roseville cafe that’s a cut above the suburban cafe scene, Calibrate Coffee is well worth a diversion.
